There now remains only a little over two weeks before the spring class races will take place for they will probably be rowed on May 4. All the crews have now given up barge practice and are rowing in shells: the seniors and juniors have been in theirs for over two weeks, the freshmen nearly as long a time, while the sophomores first used their shell on Tuesday.
The '89 crew is made up of men the most of whom have rowed every year while in college. At present their boat is speedy and as it now appears they will probably win the race. Their shell was badly damaged recently by being scratched, while passing under the new bridge by a sunken pile. E. Storrow is acting as stroke. The junior boat has made wonderful progress and will give all the crews a hard struggle. The men are well together and their shell is growing steadier every day.
'91 has a number of new men in the boat. Their rowing at present is very unsteady owing to the fact that their shell is still new to them.
The freshmen are making progress but still have serious defects to remedy, if they would make their boat speedy. Their shell itself is not fast nor is it as stiff as might be desired.
The university crew are gaining daily. They are at present rowing in a paper shell. The Athletic crew are still at work. They have tried two of the 'varsity shells but have found themselves unable to row in either. On Tuesday they went out in '91's barge.
The Union boat club have organized an eight which practice daily in the old Union boat club barge. There are thus seven eight oared crews in daily practice on the river. All the college crews have been at training tables since the April vacation.
