Dr. Barnard's Resignation.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Dr. Barnard has resigned his position as president of Columbia College.

The trustees of the college most reluctantly accepted the resignation. Dr. Barnard has occupied the position for nearly a quarter of a century, and under his administration the college has prospered wonderfully. Before he became president of Columbia he had held several important positions. In 1837 he was professor of mathematics and natural history at the University of Alabama, and in 1848 became professor of chemistry there. In 1854 he took orders in the Protestant Episcopal church, the same year becoming professor of mathematics and astronomy in the University of Mississippi. In 1856 he was elected president of the university. In 1867 he was United States commissioner to the Paris exposition. Dr. Barnard is in his eightieth year.
