President Eliot on Harvard.

The Harvard Association of Western New York gave their annual dinner last Saturday evening in Buffalo. President Eliot, who had been a guest of the Chicago Harvard Club on the 9th, and who was then on his way to Washington, was present and spoke. Referring to college athletics, President Eliot said he approved of intercollegiate contests within reasonable limits, but he would like to see the number of matches restricted and freshman matches done away with. Freshmen have not been long enough under college discipline, and they have not learned sufficient self-restraint to indulge in these exciting competitions with impunity. The average Harvard student of today is physically much superior to the average Harvard man of thirty years ago. Harvard's growth has virtually kept abreast of the growth of population in the United States, gaining about 30 per cent. every ten years. In comparison with other universities, Harvard and Yale hold a peculiar position, which they will, doubtless, continue to occupy.
