The men who are to represent Harvard in the coming contest for the Mott Haven Cup have been hard at work in the gymnasium since the Christmas recess. They are under Mr. Lathrop's constant care, and give promise of making one of the best teams, possibly the best, that Harvard has ever entered.
For the short distance runs, 100 yards, 220 yards, and one quarter mile, Baker, '86, R. D. Smith, '86, Wells, '86, Rogers, '87, Wells, '89, Fessenden, '87, Holden, '88, and L. S. Thayer, '88, are in training. Fiske, '86, Porter, '88, and Perry, '89, will train later in the year. In the 1-2 mile and mile runs the candidates are Wells, '89. W. D. Roberts, '85, Dana, '88, Wheeler, '86, A. T. Dudley, '87, Shepard, '88, Quinby, '87, and Ewald, '88. For the hurdle race, 120 yards, are trying Bradley, '86, Lund, '88, Noble, '88, and Rogers, '87.
For the mile walk there are a large number trying, several of the new men showing up remarkably well; Bemis, '87, Wright, '86, F. W. Murphy, L. S., Lord, '88, Zinkeisen, '89, H. Swain, '89, Knapp, '89, and Norton, '89, have entered to date.
Gibson, '88, Chamberlain, '86, Bowen, '87, Clark, '86, and Pennypacker, '88, are throwing the hammer. Chamberlain, '86, Clark, '86, Pennypacker, '88, and Garrison, '88, have been putting the shot; the first named with great success.
For the high jump, H. L. Clark, '87, is the only one at present sure of a place, though there are several promising candidates.
Bradley, '86. R. D. Smith, '86, L. S. Thayer, '88, Rogers and Tooker, S. C., are practising the broad jump.
In the pole vault are Frothingham, '86, J. W. Dudley, '87, and T. C. Craig, '87. For the bicycle race only one candidate has appeared, Dean, '88, of last year's team. It is hoped, however, that others will come forward when out door work begins.
