It will be remembered that at the last regular meeting of the University Boat Club, a resolution was passed to secure and present to Col. Bancroft some suitable testimonial as a proof of the esteem in which he is held by the boating men of Harvard. In accordance with this resolution the Boat Club has caused to be made a beautiful pitcher, eight inches in height, of solid, hammered silve, bearing the following inscription:
"Presented to William A. Bancroft as a token of appreciation of his efforts in behalf of the crew, 1884."
The pitcher was accompanied by the following letter from Mr. A. T. French, '85, the president of the Boat Club:
CAMBRIDGE, March 3, 1885.
Colonel Wm. A. Bancroft,
Dear Sir.- The members of the Harvard University Boat Club request me to send you the accompanying pitcher, and to express to you the hope that you will accept it in remembrance of the many hours you have spent in assisting them with your personal supervision and invaluable advice; and they desire me to assure you that they sincerely appreciate your efforts.
Very truly yours,
AMOS TUCK FRENCH, President H. U. B. C.
In response to this letter, and its accompanying testimonial, the following has been received by Mr. French, from Col. Bancroft:
CAMBRIDGE, March 5, 1885.
Mr. Amos Tuck French, President H. U. B. C.
In acknowledging the receipt through your hands yesterday, of the beautiful pitcher from the members of the Harvard University Boat Club, I beg to say that I am deeply sensible of their kindness in asking me to accept at this time such a token of the generous feelings which you express in your letter.
Conscious that the singular consideration shown me during an association of ten years with the Boat Club, makes me more than obliged both to the club, and to its members, I accept this token, undeserved though it may be, as typical of the kindness of those who gave it.
With feelings of gratitude, and affectionate regard toward each and all, I am, dear sir,
Sincerely yours, WILLIAM A. BANCROFT.
