BASE BALL.

The game opened in a drizzling rain and a cold east wind, with Harvard at the bat. Baker got his base on a fumble by Shedd, reached second on a passed ball, third on Lovering's base hit to right field, and scored on Phillip's hit to short stop.

Lovering stole second, but was forced out at third base by Allen's hit to Wadsworth. After putting Lovering out, Wadsworth made a wild throw over 1st base, giving Phillips and Allen third and second respectively, where they were left, as LeMoyne and Wins low went out in succession. Brown retired in "one, two, three" order. In the second inning Harvard failed to score, although Smith reached third base by his base-hit, a wild throw, by Wadsworth, and a wild pitch. Brown made two runs in this inning by two bases on balls, a passed ball, and a wild pitch.

Third inning. Phillips reached first base on called balls. Allen hit to Wadsworth, who fumbled the ball, giving him his base, and sending Phillips to second. LeMoyne made a pretty three base-hit between left and centre, sending in two men, but was put out himself, trying to reach home. Winslow went out on a grounder to Chase. Smith reached first on muffed three strikes, and came home on Rhett's fumble of Nichol's base-hit. Crocker flied out to Murphy. Brown failed to score. Score, Harvard 4 ; Brown 2.

In the fourth inning, Baker reached third base on Wadsworth's fumble, a steal, and Lovering's hit to Doron, but failed to score. For Brown, Chase and Shedd got their bases on balls, but the former was put out on the home plate while attempting to score on a wild pitch. Doron and Rhett both struck out, leaving Shedd on third base.

Fifth inning. For Harvard, LeMoyne reached first base on balls and stole second. Winslow fouled out to Bassett. Smith hit hard between third and short, but Wadsworth made an exceedingly good stop and threw him out at first, while LeMoyne went to third. Bassett tried to catch LeMoyne playing off his base, but Wadsworth muffed the throw and LeMoyne ran home Nichols got his base on balls but failed to reach second as Crocker went out at first by Shedd to Chase.

In the seventh, both nines failed to reach first base. In the eighth inning Nichols struck to Doron, who failed to throw the ball to Chase in time, but the umpire declared him out. Crocker reached first base on balls, and tried to steal second. Basset threw to Doron who tried to reach Crocker, but to all appearances failed. The umpire, however, decided, to the surprise of all, that he was out. Baker got his base on balls but got no farther, as Lovering went out. Brown went out in order.

Harvard failed to score in the ninth, although Allen got his base on balls, and LeMoyne made a base hit. After two men were out, Brown made a run on two bases on balls and a muffed three strikes, thus making the score 5 to 3 in Harvard's favor.

The pitching of both Nichols and Murphy was very wild, owing to the wetness of the ball. For Brown, Basset, and Chase each played extremely well, and Wadsworth did some very good as well as some pretty bad work on third base. For Harvard, Allen did far the best playing, holding Nichols' very swift and wild delivery beautifully. Nichols' pitching, though wild, was as effective as it well could have been, for ten men struck out and not a base hit was made off him. Lovering played very well at second base. Our batting was not strong, but LeMoyne and Smith did well. The umpiring was unsatisfactory.

On the whole the game was quite close, although much interest was taken away by the wretched weather. The first championship game, however, on Thursday next, when Brown will bring out their regular pitcher, will be looked forward to with much interest. On Wednesday next the nine plays the Beacons on Jarvis field. Below is the full score.
