About thirty men accompanied the Freshman Eleven to Quincy Wednesday to witness the opening game, and saw their men defeat their opponents by the crushing score of sixty-nine to nothing. The game opened at a little after three, and in two minutes Hurd of Harvard scored a touch down from which Holden kicked a goal. Quincy was next compelled to make a safety. Five minutes later a lively scrimmage took place in front of the goal post and resulted in a touchdown for Harvard by Woodman. No goal was kicked from this touchdown. The Quincy men were now decidedly rattled and played in very poor form. They were forced to make a second safety and soon after a third. Hurd now secured the ball and made a beautiful rush through his opponents lines and secured a touchdown directly behind the goal posts. Holden failed to score a goal. A few minutes after Holden by pretty dodging obtained the fourth touchdown and kicked the goal. Quincy now played a sharper game and took advantage of the muffing which the Harvard men indulged in. Just before the close of the first half a safety, and a touchdown by Fargo scored six more points for Harvard. Score, Harvard 32, Quincy 0,
The second three quarters was practically a repetition of the first, the freshmen playing a sharp, progressive game and Quincy playing in a very listless manner. In five minutes Woodman secured a touchdown. Holden next obtained the ball and kicked a pretty goal from the field. After this there followed in quick succession touchdowns by Porter, Balch, Holden, Fargo and Woodman, four of which resulted in goals. The ball was close to Quincy's goal when time was called. Score, Harvard 69, Adams Academy 0.
The freshmen played a strong game, kicking and tackling well. They fumbled the ball, however, too much, and the rushers had a tendency to drop the ball when tackled. As is usual at the beginning of each season, too much attention was given to individual playing. This fault, however, will be remedied by a little more practice. Holden and Porter played very well. Fargo made a number of fine rushes, but he was apt to drop the ball when it was passed to him. In the rush line, Hurd, Woodman, and Bancroft, were conspicuous for their steady work. The best work for Quincy was by Whitman and Slade. Harvard was represented by the following team: Full back, Porter; halfbacks, Holden and Fargo; quarterback, Osgood; rushers, Hurd, Bancroft, Balch, Jones, Purdon, Woodman and Churchill. Umpire for Harvard, Mr. Rand. Umpire for Quincy, Mr. Tyler. Referee, Mr. Homans.
