THE JUNIOR CREW IS SWAMPED.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Although a strong northwesterly wind prevailed yesterday forenoon, the junior crew made the attempt to go over the course on time. They started a few minutes after eleven, and despite the fact that each wave washed considerable water into the boat, they pushed on. As it afterward proved, the neglect to put on the washboards proved fatal. When nearly 150 yards from the Union boat-house, the forward part of the boat was so full of water that something had to be done to relieve the heavy strain. Perceiving, with the true instinct of heroes, the imminent danger to the boat and their companions, Messrs. Keith and Bunney, Horatius-like, leapt into the foaming flood and swam to the nearest land, which proved to be the Charles river embankment, some 50 feet distant. The remainder of the crew pulled the boat to the Union Club float, but there was no one there to assist them in landing, while the heavy sea running threatened to dash them against the float. Another chance was given for some one to distinguish himself, and though each wished to show himself worthy of the crew of '83, Mr. Sherwood settled the matter by jumping over-board, swimming to the float, and assisting his companions to land. As their entrance into the boat-house was entirely unexpected, there was no one there to meet them, so the only thing possible to do under the circumstances was to order hacks and come home, wrapped in as many carriage robes as the stable-keeper could be prevailed upon to lend. It is feared that the boat is somewhat strained, but it will not be definitely known until today, when the launch will go after it. It is hardly probable that all the crew have escaped without taking cold, which is very unfortunate, considering the nearness of the class races.
