Yesterday afternoon the eleven played their first game on Holmes field against the eleven from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In spite of the chilly, disagreeable weather about four hundred spectators were present. The game was called at 4.20, Goodwin, '84, acting as referee, and Mason, '84, as umpire for Harvard, and Bennett for the institute. After several attempts at goals from the field Hammond succeeded in scoring a touch-down for Harvard from which Edmands kicked a goal. Nothing more was scored by either side in the first half. In the second half Harvard pressed her opponents much more closely, but only succeeded in getting a touch-down, which Ayers made after a fine rush. The institute men were obliged to touch-down for safety four times during the last half hour. The game closed with a score of one goal and one touch-down to nothing in favor of Harvard. Haines, Du Pont and Pratt did good work for the visitors, while Kendall, Ayers and Edmands did the best playing for Harvard. Owing to their short practice our team lacked method and harmony in their rushing; they were also considerably weakened by the absence of Keith and Mason. The teams were made up as follows: Harvard. - Forwards, Kendall, Cabot, Hammond, Appleton, Ayers, Clarke, Wesselhoeft; quarter-back, Morison; half-backs, Edmands, Bradford; back, Codman. Technology. - Forwards, Du Pont, Baldwin, Winsor, M. G. Houghton, L. Houghton, Pierce, Park; quarter-back, Steele; half-backs, Pratt, Haines (capt.); back, Harriman.
