SOME SWELL STUDENTS AT THEIR TRITE TRICKS! !

ALL THE STREET LAMPS IN THE CITY SMASHED!

AN event transpired last night which has filled our peaceful community with horror and amazement. This was nothing less than the entire destruction of the street lamps of the city by a party of scoundrelly ruffians, who, there can be no doubt, are students of ??? College. President Socrates should be made to understand that the outraged community will no longer endure the criminal excesses of his students. We give the particulars of the shocking occurrence below.

Roundsman O'Phlynn of the 8th Precinct was the first to notice the destruction. About 2 A.M. he saw a number of figures steal stealthily along the west side of Acropolis Avenue and turn into Marathon Street. On returning from the other end of his beat and reaching Marathon Street, corner of Omicron, he perceived, to his surprise, that nearly all the lamps in the street were extinguished, and on his stopping for a moment to view the scene he heard a crash close behind him, and saw the only remaining lamp on Marathon Street - the one in front of Miltiades and Son's drug-store - broken and extinguished. Mr. O'Phlynn hastened at once in the opposite direction to ascertain if any of the miscreants were approaching from that quarter, but met no one, with the exception of the Rev. James W. Agesilaus, Pastor of the St. Poseidon Baptist Church on West OEdipus Street, whom he arrested on suspicion; but he was afterwards discharged, Maj. Gen. Benj. F. Nicias becoming his bondsman.

The destruction of the lamps was early discovered in other parts of the city by policemen and members of the legislature returning to their homes. A number of persons have been arrested on suspicion, among whom are a reporter of the ??? Mr. John F. Thucydides, and others. Little doubt, however, is entertained that the offenders are students of ??? College. The ringleader is supposed to be the notorious William G. Alcibiades, a recent graduate of the college, who was the Democratic candidate for Archon in the 4th Ward at the fall election.

We regret to see that our esteemed contemporary, the ??? in accordance with its custom, credits the whole disturbance to the Freshman class. This continual throwing of responsibility on the unfortunate Freshmen is as puerile as it is absurd. While members of all classes take part in the riots, the great majority of the offenders are old in iniquity and steeped in crime. The ranks of the violators of the peace, it is reported, were chiefly recruited from the B??? Institute and the Divinity School.
