THE CLASS CREWS.

TO one tired of study, of himself, and of the world, a visit on any fair afternoon to the University Boat House will do much towards restoring the feeling that comes from a sound and vigorous body. The passing of men to and from the float, the rattling of oars, and the splash of boats as they hit the water, give to the whole place an air of bustle and activity; while the single sculls and the eights, going up and down the Charles, indicate the strong interest taken in the approaching class races; and this occasion is none too far off, for to a trained eye individual members of all the crews yet have much to learn and unlearn.

Of the Freshman crew one, three, and five (sometimes) sliver out, that is, fail to pull a through-stroke; one and two don't get reach enough; one, three (only a little), five (only a little), and six meet. Two falls to port at the finish, and three puts in his oar too deep in the beginning. Four, though a faithful worker, has a lamentably short reach, does n't swing back far enough or straight, and gets his oar too high from the water on the full reach. Five clips, and six settles. Seven settles, squirms, and does n't pull his hands in high. The general faults are also numerous. The four bow men lack reach. All have a flat feather, none raise their hands high enough, or shoot away quick. Some of the men evidently don't pull a proportional share.

The Sophomores have changed often, but now have nearly all their original crew. One is inclined to dip; two and three bucket and feather too flatly; four slivers out; five has a short swing of the body, and is too light on the catch; six is slow on the shoot and hurries the recover; seven slides too quickly on recover; eight is inclined to drop his hands at full reach, and dips too deep in the middle of the stroke. All shorten their stroke too much and look out of the boat.

Though the Juniors have trained well, they are by no means perfect. Two, three, and five sliver out; six and two feather unevenly with the rest of the crew. One fails to keep his arms or back stiff, and to get his oar out on full reach; three is inclined to bucket, and does n't swing straight; five fails in reach; six's hands trouble him on the catch; seven does n't shoot quick enough or hold his hands tight; and eight is apt to overreach. All sliver out, bucket badly, and lack rhythm in movement.

The Seniors, it is said, have been improving some of late. One does n't sit up straight at finish and wobbles; two hangs and looks out of the boat; three meets at time and feathers under the water badly; four buckets badly, lets his oar fly to full reach, and slivers out; five slivers out, is inclined to bucket, does n't hold his arm stiff enough, and snaps his head; six does n't reach far enough, hangs, meets, and slivers out; seven lets his oar fly up on full reach, and does n't always sit up at finish; eight lets his oar fly up at full reach, fails to pull through always, and meets at time. The whole crew tends to bucket on full reach and fails to shoot quick enough.
