THIS very June I watch a rose
Up to my fair one's lattice climb, -
Aloft it bears a leaf of rhyme,
And love in every fibre glows.
Here will I play Sir Romeo,
Till Lady Juliet me espies,
Spellbound by her dark, liquid eyes,
That strike my heart, and pierce it through.
Then will my Lady Juliet press,
With her pink-ivory finger-tips,
The leaf, - or wins it one caress
From those spring-budded, crimson lips?
And if my suit prove vain, - then rid
Myself of weary life? Ah no!
That is the silly thing they did
In fair Verona, long ago.
What is the fate of my lone leaf,
That venturous climbs the castle wall?
I'll tell you when, vacation brief
Being o'er, we meet again next Fall.
