TO THE MUSIC OF THE FUTURE.

I

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

AMPHION, singing 'neath Boeotian skies,

Saw Theban walls in state before him rise;

His strains the rocks hard-hearted so beguiled

That they themselves in lofty order piled.

Should WAGNER try upon the hills alone

To sound the melancholy saxophone,

And blare dim discords to the hills sublime,

He 'd bring the crack of doom before its time.

II.Sad Orpheus of the sweet-toned lyre, once weeping

For his dead wife, went down to Hades grim

To seek her; and the woods and wild beasts leaping

At the wild music followed after him;

The God wept softly at the melody,

And, melting, gave him back Eurydice.

If WAGNER lost his wife, and went to Hades

To fetch her too, he 'd gain his cause, no doubt;

Tisiphone and the two other ladies

With all the gods would hurriedly go out,

And leave the fair one to be taken home;

But I am not so sure that she would come!

WEST.
