HARVARD vs. YALE (June 29, at Hartford).

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harvard 16, Yale 3, - and this is how it was done.

First Inning. - Hutchison by Latham to Wright; Parker base-hit, but put out on Smith's hit to Nunn, who fielded to Latham, the latter fielding Smith out at first, - a fine double play. For Harvard, Thayer scored on simple errors by Hutchison and Ives.

Second Inning. - Yale out in order. Harvard four runs, two earned off base-hits by Wright, Holden, Nunn, and Tyng, and sacrifice hits by Howe and Thayer. Parker and Downer made errors.

Third Inning. - Yale out in order. Base-hit by Wright, sacrifice hits by Howe and Holden; Wright out on home. No runs.

Fourth Inning. - Yale out in order. Harvard two runs; one earned off a base-hit by Thayer, a stolen base, and a two-baser by Ernst; errors by Smith and Ives.

Fifth Inning. - Ripley led off with a two-base hit, took third on Tyng's miss of Downer's third strike, and scored on a wild pitch. Downer was hit by a ball from Walden while running to second, and declared out; Walden was caught by Latham to Thayer; Brown hit hard to Holden, who jumped for the ball, but made an excusable error; stole second, and scored on a wild throw by Tyng. Harvard scored four runs on base-hits by Howe and Nunn, a sacrifice by Tyng, and errors by Brown, Walden, and Hutchison.

Sixth Inning. - Yale zero; a two-base hit by Hutchison. Harvard two runs off a base-hit by Howe, a sacrifice by Nunn, and errors by Parker, Walden, and Ives.

Seventh Inning. - Ripley took first on a fumble by Latham, but fell a victim to Tyng and Latham. Tyng made a remarkable one-handed foul fly catch, which he was obliged to jump for. Harvard nothing.

Eighth Inning. - Brown hit for a base, but was caught napping by Tyng to Wright. Harvard failed to score, although Howe made a base-hit and reached third on errors by Ives.

Ninth Inning. - Smith hit safe, and scored on Tyng's wild throw to second and Howe's fumble. Harvard went to the bat to face Carter for the last time as the Nine of 1878, and the way they batted that ball was delightful to behold. Tyng, after Thayer had gone out by Walden to Downer, hit safely for two bases in the direction of left field, and took third on the inability of two thirds of the Yale nine standing one behind another to stop the ball fielded in by Brown; this had no effect detrimental to the earning of Tyng's run, as no chance was offered to put him out; and Latham, Ernst, and Wright followed with safe hits, and earned three runs.

Howe had Carter completely under his sway, making three base-hits and two sacrifice hits out of six times to the bat. Wright, Nunn, and Tyng also batted finely. Thayer and Nunn fielded finely, while Wright and Latham played their bases with their usual perfection. Ripley and Brown did their best for Yale, and played a fine up-hill game. Carter was well backed up by Ives, the former's delivery having a decidedly erratic tendency, and consequently being hard to handle without errors.
