TO THE EDITORS OF THE CRIMSON : -

I should like to suggest a change in the library regulations about taking out books. I believe it would be better in many ways to have books taken from the library in term time kept not for a month as now, but for two weeks. During the last two years the use of the library has increased very much; and as there are comparatively few second copies, we often find it extremely difficult to get a book which we want without waiting a long time for it. Probably few books taken from the library cannot easily be read in two weeks; and those which cannot be returned at the end of this time might be renewed, by giving in a new slip at the library. In this way books would not be kept out long after they were read, merely because men are too lazy to take them back. And if it were not necessary to present the book itself at the library, the inconvenience of renewing would be very slight. Those who use city libraries like the Boston Athenaeum, often live at so great a distance, that it would be quite inconvenient to renew a book in this way; but here the distances are so short that no one would have a right to complain. Besides, it would be peculiarly easy to introduce this change here, for most of the men who are reading with a view to writing, and so might want a book for a considerable time, do their work in the library and not in their rooms.

I believe, then, that there would be a great gain and but slight inconvenience in returning books in term time to be renewed, if not renewed at the end of two weeks.
