MALE BREAKOUT ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Housman Rises Above Ivy’s Best By WALTER E. HOWELL Tuesday, June 05, 2007 7:14 PM One week defined an entire season for the Crimson men’s basketball team. More importantly, though, it defined what the team’s standout point guard, sophomore Drew Housman, had become.

COMEBACK OF THE YEAR: Trick Plays, Pizzotti’s Return Surprise Lehigh Quarterback’s unexpected start, Murphy’s misdirection propel comeback win By MALCOM A. GLENN Tuesday, June 05, 2007 7:10 PM Just days prior to the Crimson’s Sept. 30 showdown with Lehigh, Harvard had a glaring question to answer: who would be its quarterback? With junior Chris Pizzotti nursing an injured knee and sophomore Jeff Witt out with an injured shoulder, the eventual surprise start by Pizzotti was a triumphant comeback in the early stages of the junior’s career as a starter. But as it turns out, it wasn’t even the best comeback of the afternoon. |

FEMALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Murphy Powers Crimson to Title By JULIA R. SENIOR Tuesday, June 05, 2007 7:51 PM On April 26, facing Boston College with one out and one runner on in the top of the first, freshman Lauren Murphy smashed the little yellow ball over the left-field wall. Later, with one out in the third, Murphy sent the little yellow ball out again, far enough to clear the center-field wall this time. And as the day wore on, with two out and two on in the fourth, Murphy blasted the yellow ball for the same long ride over the same center-field wall.
FEMALE BREAKOUT ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Healthy Madick Stifles Opponents, Pulls in Honors By TED KIRBY Tuesday, June 05, 2007 7:50 PM Whatever junior pitcher Shelly Madick did during the offseason to bounce back from her injury-plagued 2006 season, it worked like a charm. Madick led the Ivy League this past season with a 1.50 ERA, was second with 148 strikeouts, and compiled a 16-6 record, helping lead Harvard to its first Ivy League title since 2001.

UPSET OF THE YEAR: Harvard Surprises Eagles in 4-0 Shutout By COURTNEY D. SKINNER Tuesday, June 05, 2007 7:23 PM Sometimes it’s the underdog that has the most bite. Starting the season with an 0-3 record for the first time since the 1951-52 campaign, the Harvard men’s hockey team looked like no match for the Eagles. But the Crimson, led by rookie netminder Kyle Richter's first shutout, upset Boston College, 4-0, at the Bright Hockey Center in November. |

Time To Make Sense of It All “I will not philosophize,” declared The Crimson in 1873. “I will be read.” At last, status and tradition have given me a chance to violate that statement on both counts. For the first time in my four years as a Crimson sportswriter, two on the masthead, the second as editor, my column space truly belongs to me.
Rules for Staying Forever Young
As graduation looms, my youth, so assured when I first entered college, suddenly seems an endangered entity. It has been constantly assailed of late by the unconquerable reality of having to hang up the old spikes—in a literal sense with regards to my baseball playing days, which ended with one final tour through the junior varsity circuit this spring, and figuratively with regards to The Crimson, for which I began writing over three years ago.
Learning the Value of A Harvard Education
This spring, Harvard gave me money for a post-graduate trip to research baseball, which is basically akin to giving a five-year-old money to research a candy shop. And on the day that the fellowship paperwork arrived in the mail, I understood exactly why Harvard was “Harvard.”
Sports and the Moments That Change Us Coaches and athletes love talking about moments—spans of seconds so important that they would somehow alter everything that followed in a particular game or season. Sometimes they call these moments “momentum changers”, sometimes they call them “turning points.”
Of Childhood, Conjectures, and Coming Full Circle
The teacher rises, clasping her hands together and smiling. For the past 10 minutes, the seventh grade has been struggling to answer a single question, and here in this red brick building on East 22nd Street, time is almost up.
Lessons Learned, On the Beat and On the Field
As I have heard, there are three keys to having a successful career as the Harvard men’s ultimate frisbee club team’s captain. First, you have to recruit and expand the membership. Second, you must make nationals—the crowning achievement of the college ultimate frisbee world. And finally, you have to publicize your success.
