Cuban Premier Fidel Castro will address an expected crowd of 6,000 from Dillon Field House Balcony on Saturday, April 25. Fear for Castro's safety caused the Law School Forum, sponsor of the speech, to decide against using Harvard Stadium.
Concern over using the Stadium rose when the Forum learned that the Stadium's upper bleachers would not be lighted for the night-time speech. This would make it very difficult for police to protect Castro from possible assassins concealing themselves in the bleachers.
Administration officials were "rather apprehensive" about Castro's safety in the Stadium, it has also been reported. However, John S. Samuels 2L, vicePresident of the Forum, said yesterday that officials had done no more than "give advice."
President Pusey will be absent during Castro's visit, according to J. Hampden Robb '21, University Marshal. Castro will be introduced by Dean Bundy.
To protect Castro, the Forum will not allow more than 6000 people to hear the Premier. The audience will sit on rented chairs in the area between the Field House and the Stadium. Quieting fear that rain might force a last-minute cancellation of the speech, Castro has told the Forum that he will speak in any weather.
Clad in his green army fatigues, Castro spent much of yesterday, which was his first day in Washington, wandering around the city and shaking hands. He complained that the great public interest in his six guards made him appear dangerous.
Sale of tickets to members of the University will begin today at 23 Everett St. The Forum is now receiving mail orders, and public sales will begin Tuesday at the Coop.
